Unit 5.2A Assignment

On the class wiki site, post your favorite new Web 2.0 tool that has not been covered in detail in this class that you have discovered in this course or elsewhere. List the URL, what the tool is, and why you find it useful using the wiki template page. No duplication allowed-each page must be an original new tool. This can be done after reviewing the Unit 9 material, which covers more Web 2.0 resources.

Title of Site:

Kahoot!

URL:

https://getkahoot.com/

Description of Site:

This site is free. All a teacher has to do is create a free account and begin making their “Kahoots”. Teachers can create a quiz, discussion, or survey after signing in at https://getkahoot.com/. Teachers can create a quiz making as many questions as they want. These questions using the quiz function must all be multiple choice. A teacher then selects the amount of time the students have to answer the question and choosing a point value. The default point value is at 1000 points. Students go to the website at kahoot.it and type the PIN number they see on the teacher’s screen and create a nickname. Then they are able to play Kahoot with the rest of their classmates. Getting the answer correct will give students points as well as getting the question quickly. If you get the answer correct, but it takes a longer amount of time, the student will still get points, but not as many. This website does not have advertisements, and does allow teachers to create their own content or use one of the “Public” Kahoots. Right now, there are over 2.5 million public quizzes, discussions, or surveys. Teachers can use Kahoots that other people have created, but do not have the ability to edit these Kahoots. From personal experience, sometimes that is challenging, because as a teacher, you may feel that a question requires more time and students do not have time to answer. I enjoy creating my own Kahoots. Teachers create and start their quizzes from the website, getkahoot.com, and students sign in using a PIN at kahoot.it. Students do not need to have an account in order to play. Students will love playing this game, and it will be very competitive. I think that all grade levels would enjoy playing Kahoot, because of the level of interaction, competitiveness, and instant feedback and results.

Educational Uses of Site

Like described above, teachers could use this as a reflection tool if they want students to take a survey or discussion. However, probably the most popular way it is used is the quiz function on the website. The quiz provides immediate feedback for teachers, and students will really try because of the competitive nature of the website. This could be a valuable tool used to formatively assess your students in helping to guide your instruction.

Review of Site

I love playing Kahoot. My students love playing as well. Like any new technology tool, it takes a little time to get used to, but once you get the hang of it, you'll be making quizzes quickly and students will love coming to class to play Kahoot and not realize they are learning. I feel as though I will use this next year as a warm-up with my classes and will be even more effective when our school goes 1 to 1 with iPads for each student.
